TDM Sunset FAQs

In August 2022, the Federal Communications Commission announced that U.S. telecom companies are no longer required to provide copper landline services. These include legacy phone services, such as POTS and Centrex lines. 

Providers are now replacing those services with fiber and mobile networks.

There is no imposed timeline for TDM Sunset activities and is driven by carrier schedules.

AT&T has already retired its legacy services. NCDIT continues to support legacy TDM services from the remaining contracted providers.

We strongly encourage customers, however, to review their telecom inventory to assess continued need and consult with us to explore available options for your future needs.

Services affected include the following:

• CENTREX
• POTS
• PRI
• Long Distance DS1s (Dedicated)
• Analog Private Line
• Remote Call Forwarding
• Analog Voice Trunks
• BRI ISDN

The costs charged through a contracted vendor will be subject to increasing tariff rates set by the vendor. Projected impacts have been estimated to be as high as 300%.

Customers with expiring contracts, who have not selected and transitioned to an alternate solution, will see a substantial price increase on their TDM services.

NCDIT offers a managed VoIP service for our WAN customers.

NCDIT offers a managed VoIP solution for our WAN customers. Alternatives are available, such as a hosted VoIP service using state convenience contracts. Local government agencies can also pursue alternate solutions directly with a service provider. 

Review and assess your current telecommunications services, and consult with NCDIT to explore available options for your future telephony needs.

To disconnect lines, open a Classic Voice Terminate request in the NCDIT Support Center. Under Classic Voice Selections on the request form, choose Terminate, and enter the phone numbers you will be disconnecting in the field labeled List telephone number.
