Porting Your Phone Numbers to a New Telephone Service Provider

These instructions are intended for local government and education entities that are billed for telephone services by the N.C. Department of Information Technology and are porting their phone numbers to a third-party vendor.

State agencies are prohibited from porting their telephone number.

If your site is changing telephone service providers and needs to retain existing telephone numbers, please follow the steps below to port the numbers to your new provider.

Porting Process

  1. Open a Basic Voice Number Port request in the NCDIT Service Portal. Under Basic Voice Selections, choose Number Port, and enter the phone numbers you will be porting in the field labeled, List telephone number.
  2. NCDIT’s Request Fulfillment team will email you the Customer Service Record(s) (CSR) acknowledgment for the lines you will port.
  3. Once you receive the CSR(s), send it to your new vendor.
  4. Your new vendor will complete a Letter of Agency/Authorization (LOA) to match what is listed on the CSR. A separate LOA will be needed for each CSR, if there are more than one.
  5. Reply all to the NCDIT Request Fulfillment team’s email (that you received in Step 2) and attach the completed LOA(s) for NCDIT to sign.
  6. After you receive the signed letter(s) from NCDIT’s Request Fulfillment team, you can provide the LOA(s) to your new vendor.
  7. Your new vendor can then schedule the telephone number port.
  8. When your phone number port process has been completed, you must inform NCDIT’s Request Fulfillment team, by replying all to the email (that you received in Step 2) to disconnect the number(s) and stop billing.
